Same-Day Crowns

At Illumination Dentistry, we can design, mill, and place a permanent crown in a single visit.

No temporary crown, no messy impressions, no second appointment. Not every case qualifies for same-day treatment; your dentist will let you know if yours does during the exam.

Why patients choose same-day crowns

  • Speed: the whole process usually wraps up in a few hours, in one visit.
  • Comfort: no temporary crown, no traditional impression material.
  • Convenience: you leave with your permanent crown instead of coming back weeks later.
  • Precision: digital scanning and CAD design give the crown a precise fit the first time.

How it works

This is all done with CEREC technology, using computer-aided design and manufacturing to build your crown on site instead of sending an impression out to a lab. If you're dealing with a damaged tooth, need a crown after a root canal, or just want fewer appointments, ask us whether a same-day crown is right for you at our Lutz, FL office.

  • Evaluation: we examine the tooth and review digital x-rays to confirm it's a good candidate for a same-day crown.
  • Tooth preparation: any decay or damage is removed and the tooth is shaped to fit the new crown.
  • Digital scan: a handheld camera captures a digital impression, no putty or trays involved.
  • Crown design: we design the crown from that 3D model right in the office, matching your natural teeth.
  • Milling: a milling machine carves the crown from a solid block of ceramic or porcelain, typically in 15 to 30 minutes.
  • Fit check and color match, then firing in a dental oven to reach final strength.
  • Cementing: after a final fit check, we bond the crown to your tooth and confirm your bite and x-ray look right.

When a crown is the right call

A crown is typically recommended when a tooth has too much decay for a filling to handle, has cracked or fractured, is badly worn down, or needs protection after a root canal. It fully covers the visible portion of the tooth above the gumline, restoring its strength, shape, and bite function rather than just patching a section of it. Crowns are also used to anchor a dental bridge or to cap a dental implant.

Choosing a crown material

We'll walk you through which material fits your specific tooth, bite, and budget during your exam — there's no single "best" material, just the right one for the job it needs to do.

  • All-ceramic or porcelain: closely matches the color and translucency of natural enamel, making it the top choice for front teeth and anywhere a natural look matters most.
  • Zirconia: exceptionally strong and chip-resistant while still taking a natural shade, a common choice for molars that handle heavy chewing force.
  • Porcelain-fused-to-metal: combines a metal substructure for strength with a porcelain outer layer for appearance, a durable option for back teeth.

Caring for your new crown

With reasonable care, a well-made crown can last many years. If yours ever feels loose, cracked, or off in your bite, don't wait to have it checked, small issues are much easier to fix early.

  • Brush and floss around it exactly as you would a natural tooth — a crown doesn't decay, but the tooth structure and gumline underneath it still can.
  • Avoid using your crowned tooth to bite down on ice, hard candy, or non-food objects like pen caps or packaging, which can chip porcelain or crack the crown.
  • If you grind or clench your teeth at night, ask us about a custom nightguard to protect the crown and your other teeth.
  • Keep up with regular checkups so we can confirm the crown's fit and margins stay tight over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a same-day crown take?

The whole process usually wraps up in a few hours, in one visit — no temporary crown and no second appointment.

Does a same-day crown require impressions?

No. A handheld camera captures a digital scan instead of traditional putty or trays.

Is everyone a candidate for a same-day crown?

Not every case qualifies for same-day treatment. Your dentist will let you know if yours does during the exam.

What technology is used to make the crown?

CEREC technology — computer-aided design and manufacturing that mills the crown on site from a solid block of ceramic or porcelain, instead of sending an impression out to a lab.

When is a crown recommended instead of a filling?

When a tooth has too much decay for a filling to handle, has cracked or fractured, is badly worn, or needs protection after a root canal — a crown covers and restores the whole visible tooth rather than patching part of it.

What material will my crown be made from?

It depends on the tooth: all-ceramic/porcelain for the most natural look on front teeth, zirconia for extra strength on molars, or porcelain-fused-to-metal for a durable back-tooth option. We'll recommend the right fit during your exam.
